Biography
Born 26 February 1995

Once upon a time there was a wise Sage called Mark Peters, he was a kind and gentle
man, from the far reaches of the known universe, also called Cambridge by some
scholarly types.
He was approached by Liam's parents and asked for a donation of £20.
Mark said "Wait a while I have an idea"
We waited as the kindly man suggested.
Then from upon high in the towers of STAR 107 radio, was born unto the world "an idea
that might work" .
This idea was good.It was very good.It was pretty darned good.
In fact it snowballed into LIAMSMILE.
Mark Peters and the rest of the crew at Star 107,promoted Liamsmile until two of them
actually exploded under their tireless efforts.
They generated through air time sufficient interest to raise around nearly £20,000 .
This was done by promoting www.justgiving.com/liamsmile and collections and
donations from individuals and many companies around Cambridgeshire.
Eventually on December 22nd,2006,which marked the point that Liam had been free from
treatment for his cancer for twelve months,he took to the water at the Next Generation
pool in Cambridge, and swam ONE MILE in under 50 minutes.
This is pretty good as he was 11 years old at the time, and had 50% of his left thigh
muscles missing as a result of cancer to his leg and lungs.
Liam did this himself through sheer determination to give back something to one of the
charities that helped him and his family, and to do it in memory for his friend Jack
Wilkinson who died from cancer in August 2006,aged just 12 years.
This Marked the start of Liam's fundraising for CLIC Sargent.
"Five millionaires, author and former politician Jeffrey Archer, Dragons Den and
entrepreneur Duncan Bannatyne, Ann Summer's founder Jacqueline Gold, Crystal
Palace Chairman and owner Simon Jordan and the MOBO's founder Kanya King, will
decide who, of those standing before them, is deserving of a share of the massive cash
sum in Fortune: Million Pound Giveaway."
In mid december 2006, Liam attended the ITV studios in the shadow of Bow flyover in
East London,to film for the series Million Pound Giveaway.
He successfully presented his case as to why the panel should donate £50,741.10 to his
appeal for CLIC SARGENT.
The panelists own money was going to purchase a luxury static 3 bedroomed caravan at
Filey in Yorkshire.
This will allow 30 families every year
to have a free holiday away and to
help them forget the pressures and
stresses that childhood cancer
creates within a family.
This would bring Liam's fund raising
efforts to around £70,000
Liam went on to win many awards for his bravoury and fundraising in his short life.
These awards included;
The Diana Award presented by Gordon Brown, who subsequently spoke about Liam in
his first official speach as Prime Minister.
The Pride of Britain Award presented by Sir Richard Branson,Rebecca Adlington and
Carol Vorderman.
Liam had raised around £320,000 for CLIC Sargent,by the time he died aged just 14.
Since then his Father, went with CLIC Sargent to TESCO HQ where as a direct result of seeing and hearing what Liam
had done, they were able to make CLIC Sargent a charity of the year.
This raised over £7,000,000 for CLIC Sargent all because of the inspiration and motivation of one special child.
Liam's brother (Callum Fairhurst) has now taken over fundraising where Liam left off.
Last year Callum and Team Twycle cycled John O'Groats to Lands End in six days.Callum was only 13 when he did
this.
Liam has also been honoured by the Cambridge Evening News paper, they have named their award for the Child of
Courage after him.
The Ely Standard newspaper have named a Sporting Award after him too.
Additionally his name lives on atRed Lodge Karting where an annual event marking his birthday is held to raise funds
for charity. Cherry Hinton Lions football Club in Cambridge also remember Liam with a trophy named after him, plus they have
kindly made Liam and his family Life Vice Presidents of Cherry Hinton football club.
